About

The Artist

To ordinary folks and the uninitiated old broken stuff, garbage and other waste materials that end up either in landfills or floating in the sea are simply throwaway stuff. But to the beautiful minds and creative hands of an artist they present a vast and sometimes unmatched opportunity to create pieces that are matchlessly unique and often breath-takingly amazing.

Born in 1957 in Calauan, Laguna, and raised in the quiet town of Bauan, Batangas, Remo T. Valenton was destined to become one of the province’s most renowned artists. He completed his elementary education at Bauan Central School and graduated from high school at the Bauan High School. He then pursued Fine Arts at the prestigious Philippine Women’s University (PWU), majoring in Painting, where he honed his innate skills and polished his knack for creative expression in the very same classrooms and corridors that produced some of the country’s most eminent artistic luminaries. His innate talent and unwavering dedication to his artistry earned him the respect of his peers and professors, shaping him into a respected alumnus.

Valenton’s commitment to his craft was evident from a young age when he recognized his talent for the arts. He excelled in all subjects and activities related to drawing, especially watercolor painting. Motivated by his parents’ encouragement, he dedicated himself to honing this gift, ultimately becoming well respected artist that he is today. Valenton co-founded Gray Owl Resources, an advertising services business in Bauan, and proceeded to establish BAGSIK (Batangueñong Grupo sa Sining at Kultura), the oldest and pioneering art group in the Batangas province in 1991. The BAGSIK Art Group originated from an idea he conceived while teaching art lessons in Batangas in 1989. To this day, BAGSIK continues to play a crucial role in promoting arts and culture in the region by organizing exhibitions, workshops, and various cultural events.

Now a prominent name in the Philippine contemporary art scene, Remo Valenton with his eponymous REMOISM, an artistic style derived from his first name, is rapidly gaining popularity. This style features upcycled materials, such as worn-out GI sheets, combined with found objects and applied with vibrant colors, resulting in captivating artworks that define his signature style. A unique form of Abstract Expressionism, REMOISM is a fusion that transcends traditional boundaries and captivates the art world with its innovative approach. His work is characterized by a fluid and intuitive process, similar to a potter shaping clay, where mind, intuition, and body harmonize harmoniously. The beauty of his artistry is his ability to make the viewers think of the underlying message of his pieces.

The artist Remo Valenton was way ahead of his time when he started doing his one-of-a-kind art pieces made from bits and pieces of junk, scrap metal and iron, old, corrugated iron sheets to be exact, in the early 60’s and 70’s as a form of protest to the excesses of the national government. At a time of intense unrest and upheaval that shook the country to its very core; the young Remo Valenton found himself caught in the middle of the swirling protest movement that threatened to change the country’s destiny for better or worse. Who would have thought that a so-called awakening or “A-ha!” moment during the turbulent days of student protests in the early 60’s and 70’s would eventually lead to a life-long passion? That’s exactly what happened to Remo Valenton that eventually led to the birth of REMOISM.

Reclaimed steel and iron pieces plus GI sheets get more love from Remo Valenton with a body of work that takes upcycling to a whole new level of awesomeness. He gives new meaning to the popular saying that “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” by turning what are otherwise junk or found objects into artistic pieces that are worthy of praise and adulation. While his works are grounded on time – tested classical techniques and traditional methods, he is also motivated by eclectic and adventurous composition. Valenton stirs things up by a different take on the classics, marrying it with modern flair resulting in a clever and appealing mix of tradition and contemporary. He is known for his bold use of vibrant colors and rich textures, conjuring images which evoke experiences rather than merely depicting subjects. In addition to his mastery of color and form, he incorporates scrap corrugated iron roofs into his creations, reflecting his commitment to environmental sustainability. This unexpected fusion of the old and the new results in a bewildering burst of colors that never fails to delight the eyes and lift the spirits of his audiences.

As one pores over his works through the years, the word “wizard” briefly flashes before your eyes, but you dismiss the thought, ruminating the deep process of conceptualization, the mind–blowing visualization and the unimaginably meticulous process of putting it all together to come up with one cohesive eye-popping piece. Examining each piece closely, you get a deep appreciation of the brilliance of Remo Valenton’s mind, and how every minute component and intricate detail is exactly where it belongs. That is the magic of Remo Valenton and the appeal of a Remo Valenton piece – incomparable, ground–breaking, mind-boggling. At the same time, he has remained true to his core DNA of showcasing the heritage, history and tradition of Filipino artistry while remaining creatively engaging and relevant to the times.

Through the years he has participated in numerous group exhibitions, has held 3 major solo exhibitions — “THE ART OF REMO VALENTON” at the Museo Batangan in November 2023, “REMOISM UNLEASHED” at the Philippine Women’s University in September 2024, and a “REDAMANCY” at the Robinson Galleria’s ARTablado in September 16-30, 2025. The first solo show, “THE ART OF REMO VALENTON” introduced his signature style and point-of-view to the contemporary Filipino art scene. Taking the spotlight on his own, the exhibition gave the audience a glimpse into Remo Valenton’s mind and deepest thoughts. “REMOISM UNLEASHED” saw him going back to his alma mater, the Philippine Women’s University (PWU) confident and sure – footer with an art style and creative voice that is distinctly his own, and billed eponymously as “Remoism.”

For his recent 3rd solo exhibition “REDAMANCY,” the artist Valenton chose to be deeply personal with a tribute to his late wife in a show that plunged into the deep mysteries of unconditional love between two people and probed the many facets of the unwavering and often undying commitment to love, hold and share, till death do they part. Derived from the Latin “redamare” which means to love in return, Remo Valenton sought to dramatically capture on canvas the kind of love that is reciprocated in full. In his 3rd one-man show, he comes full circle with his artistic journey by I purposely going back to my creative roots; incorporating elements from past works and re-imagining them with a modern twist; making them fresh and relatable to the current breed of art enthusiasts. More than just a show of talent and creativity, “Redamancy” is a vow to remember, to respond, to continue loving, even when the beloved cannot answer.

2025 is shaping up to be a busy year for Remo Valenton. In April 2025, he travelled to Pretoria, South Africa as part of VIAJE 5, the latest in the series of international exhibitions organized by KUNST Filipino (Kapatiran at Ugnayan ng mga Natatanging Sining at Talento ng Filipino) in cooperation with the Philippine Embassy. Together with the exhibit at the prestigious Javett Gallery, Remo Valenton together with 3 other Filipino artists held a workshop for South African kids, giving the youngsters a dose of Filipino artistic ingenuity with a global perspective.

He was also part of the group exhibit of BAGSIK last April, 2025 billed as “BAHAGHARI, Mga Kulay ng Buhay” at the ARTablado in Robinsons Galleria; and of BAGSIK’s group exhibit BIYAHENG ANGONO” in SM Angono in July), Lima Park in Lipa City (KASARINLAN, Mga Kwento ng Bayan Ko), a fund – raising exhibit for Agoncillo, Batangas; a group exhibit at the Blanco Family Museum and Gallery in August, plus 2 other group exhibitions in Batangas City before the end of the year. He also took a major step in 2025 by joining of talents of Drybrush Gallery in SM MOA, one of the Manila’s most prominent galleries known as a vibrant vessel for flourishing and master Filipino and local artists.

Remo Valenton was a recipient of the recently concluded BANTOG AWARDS 2025 of the Batangas State University where he was conferred the award for Excellence in Visual Arts, where BAGSIK (Batanguenng Grupo sa Sining at Kultura) also received a Special Citation.

He currently serves as the president of BAGSIK, and is an active member of the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP), the country’s oldest and most prestigious art group. Additionally, he is part of PINTA NUEVE, an art group from Philippine Women’s University (PWU) that was established in the 1970s and counts among its members some of the leading luminaries in the world of Philippine contemporary art. He keeps himself engaged in community service and currently holds the position of Deputy Commander of the Knights of Rizal (KOR) HEART Chapter in Batangas. The BAGSIK Art Group, with more than 100 active members from Batangas Province, is dedicated to a vigorous and sustained advocacy of creating a greater awareness and a deeper appreciation of the vital role of art in national identity. They conduct regular charity projects, art workshops at elementary schools and universities, and hold group art exhibits, all aimed at making arts and culture accessible to more people in every corner of the province. He is quite active in community service which counts among its highlights a find-raising initiative for the Coral na Munti Elementary School in Agoncillo, Batangas that raised Php 280,000.00 during the Taal Volcano eruption in 2020; another fund raiser in 2022, this time for the repair of the roof of the Barangay Barigon Elementary School also in Agoncillo, Batangas; and an annual Art Workshop for the residents of Bahay Pag-asa, a shelter for child and teenage offenders.

Remo Valenton and his group envision the arts as a key component in cultural tourism by spreading arts culture to everyone, whether child or adult who is interested and passionate about arts, thereby making them an integral part of community building. This advocacy positions them as a major frontrunner in discovering and cultivating local art talents while enriching the local art scene in the province. This undertaking enjoys the full support of the provincial government of Batangas through the close collaboration with the Provincial Tourism, Culture and Arts Office (PTCAO). Despite limited resources, the group remains dedicated to its mission and actively seeks alternative resources to fund its activities. Valenton is optimistic that with constant cooperation with the LGUs, especially the province’s tourism office, a sustained support mechanism will be eventually institutionalized to support local arts and culture.

The thriving and vibrant Philippine art scene is a result of the creative expression of current breed of young and up-coming artists and the sustained artistic work of the more seasoned masters. While the Batangas local art scene was previously dominated by paintings in the traditional mode, it has now blossomed into more diverse milieu, with experimentations with more media, street art, installations and other unexplored methods that are pioneering and breaking new ground in the mold of Remo Valenton’s REMOISM.

What’s beautiful and what is considered art has evolved through the years, and Remo Valenton, one of today’s most popular names in the local art circuit manages to keep pace with ever – changing set of standards. His signature style brings to fore the extraordinary clash of the old and the new in an unexpected merger that is fresh as it is familiar. With a discriminating and fickle audience always on the lookout for the next best thing, he remains grounded on time – tested techniques and stays relevant with just the right dash of modern sensibility.

Visual artist Remo Valenton, channeled his creative exuberance and youthful activism into an art form that is distinctly his and billed eponymously as “Remoism.” Drawing influences from myriad sources, including his most innermost thoughts and deepest emotions. Remo Valenton continues to capture the imagination of his audience, who like the rest of the Philippine contemporary art world awaits with bated breath what Remo Valenton has in store as his next major milestone.

"Everyday is a learning process contributing to my development as an artist. Such is my way of life."
